In an effort to voice everyone’s opinion on Things Panamanians Like, we’d like to take a moment to cite this review (scroll to the bottom) from Panama’s progressive blog Delante.com (another thing Panamanians like) whose slogan is “anarchy online.” The site has sections like “Camel Toe Information,” “ChollyWood,” and “Noriega & Balbina 1989.” The part about our site translates loosely as: “I have read the blog and all I can say is it’s a bunch of linguistic garbage and racism from some North Americans who are frustrated with Panama. The list is so insulting and with such poor intentions that no Panamanian would be proud to be so.”

Panamanians are notoriously thin-skinned and ‘acomplejaos’
(look it up)
Dealante is similar to this blog, it is run by an ungrateful foreigner in Paradise.
Colombians and Venezuelans are the ones who contribute to Dealante, people who cannot live in their own fucking countries and are ungrateful to the people and country that have invited them in. Poco de mal paridos.
What Panamanian in their right mind wants to live in Venezuela and Colombia?
USA. Sickest place in the world, with wifes that kill their husbands for life insurance. Major problems with social security, and kids with heart diseases and eating disorders. And we talk about having a complex, let’s see. Talk about the 9/11, they terrorize, they become so sensitive about the topic, watch everything over the shoulder, and get the conclusion that they have to attack this country just because they “assume” they are dangerous for americans. Also think they have the right to steal the oil from other countries. And most importantly, the most drug consumer in the world. We are victims of dealers and Carteles because Americans demands it.
I’ll make a blog about USA too, satirizing those topics, specially 9/11, making fun of it, how sweet.
Gringo, I am curious. Do Panamanians feel abused by the USA? Does Panama feel used and is there still anti-American sentiments I don’t mean to be unsensitive but I am curious because you respond with such an agressive or insecure tone.
Sherrry: May I recommend you read a book about the History of Panama.
This is what I do not like about gringos, always feigning stupid when you are placed on a spot.
Do Panamanians hate Americans? No
Is there anti-American sentiment in Panama. Yes.
Did you forget that the US invaded Panama in 1989 and the many years of disrespecting Panama’s sovereignty over its own land?
Aggresive and insecure tone?
I find it laughable that many of you are living in Panama , and runnig around with airs of superiority when you cannot even live in your own fucking country because your pensions and salaries are too low.
We know that some of the lowest of the low Americans are the ones who are moving to Panama, and a few good people.
It is very clear from many of the gringos who post here.
The real good Americans living in Panama would never patronize this anti Panamanian trash that is posted in Things Panamanins like.
And this is not me being sensitive, this is the plain fucking truth.
^^ the very picture of thin-skinned and acomplejao
Hello all, I do not live in Panama. I own property in Coronado which I purchased 2 years ago. I come down once a year. So, I am just trying to better understand Panama’s people.
I suppose the question I wanted to ask is how, when your country spends millions and millions of dollars trying to get people like me to come down and vacation or buy real estate, can you have harbor this secret anger? Do you break out into this rage every time a tourist coments something funny about Panama? I can understand how there might be resentment, but then wouldn’t it be better to market your product to other people?
At any rate, I find the things on this website to be humorous. The same sorts of quirky things you can find in any country if you look close. They convince me that my investment was worthwhile. But the comments above seem to sugest otherwise.
Embera, are you suggesting Panama would prefer to be under the regime of General Noriega? Yo soy panameno tmb and I have to quiet you here. The majority of gringos here are the good kind. Of course there are some of the bad apples. But you get that anywhere. To Sherry, I say, Panama does welcome gringos but be aware that they are very sensitive about certain issues (a lot reveled on these comments). To Embera, I say, be a better ambassador to our guests and try to get over our insecurities.
I can totally understand where this statement comes from, but wanting it to be so doesn’t make it true:
“Did you forget that the US invaded Panama in 1989 and the many years of disrespecting Panama’s sovereignty over its own land?”
Panama wasn’t even a country until the U.S. did a dirty deal and bought it from Colombia. The awful gringos built the Canal, at an enormous expense and human toll (mostly to imported non-Panamanian workers). The result of this engineering feat brought the newly formed Panama into the 2nd world. This is hard to swallow for any nationalist, but it’s true. Would it be better if Panama today were a remote province of Colombia?
Giving the Canal land back to Panama was a nice gesture, but according to the original deal, not necessary by Panama law. Yes, it helped that the gringos wrote the laws.
It’s not going to be popular when any world power keeps a hunk of terrain (see N. Ireland) in a less powerful nation, but it’s hard to deny what building the Canal, fostering Panama’s independence from Colombia and defending this region (when it served U.S. interests) did for this part of the world.
= Are some gringos obnoxious? YES
= Is the U.S. military obnoxious in its influence? YES
= Did the U.S. “create” Noriega? Probably
All that said…did the Canal and U.S. presence here help Panama overall?
HELL YES
If Panama wants to continue to court rich, dumb gringos to come here and make dumb investments into Trump Tower, etc…it might be good to at least try to hide the resentment…or even better, try to get over it.
These ain’t the same gringos that occupied your country 30+ years ago. Since gringos don’t read history, most of them don’t even understand why ur so upset!
To jojodancer:
I am a Zonian, and consider myself Panamanian as much as a Gringo. You are wrong on so many things you write. Maybe you need to revisit your history of Panama.
Just to correct you on one major issue, The original Canal treaty which was signed in the early 1900′s, and which gave the canal rights to the Americans was never even signed by a Panamanian citizen. The Hay–Bunau-Varilla Treaty was a treaty signed on November 18, 1903, by the United States and “Panama”, that established the Panama Canal Zone and the subsequent construction of the Panama Canal. It was named after its two primary negotiators, Phillipe Bunau-Varilla, the French diplomat “representing” Panama, and United States Secretary of State John Hay.
Bunau-Varilla was never appointed to represent Panama by ANY panamanian. He was there to oversee the French interest “selling” the Canal contruction rights and equipment to the USA, from the failed Panama Canal Company established by the French. In fact, it was Ferdinand de Lesepps, the architect of the Suez Canal, who founded the Canal Company on behalf of the French in the mid 1800′s, not the USA
Read and learn more before you speak nonsense.
Thanks for the explanation my friend…. clear as pure water.
Sherry, stop lying, you are not Panamanian.
Panama gained its independence from Spain in 1821 and then join la Gran Colombia, Simon Bolivar’s dream was unite to South American countries.
After Bolivar’s death, the oligarchs in Colombia, backward as they are still today in Colombia and Panama, were moving away from Bolivar’s agenda.
In 1903, the US help panama secede from Colombia. There was always a panama from the early days.
This is the problem with you gringos, you know nothing about Panama.
You did not make Panama. You gringos did not make Panama because Panama did not come from your groin. Stop lying to yourselves.
The arrogance of you believing that Panama is yours. Have some fucking respect. Hey it was brains that we used to help us have full control of the Panama Canal and it would be brains that we will to use to get you out of Panama. Mark my words.
Bobote Dancer: Who the hell says Panama needs gringos to help build Panama?
Estas soñando, por favor. The ones who invite you are idiots. You will be leaving Panama, pretty soon, mark my words.
@Embera:
You embarrass Panamanians. Please stop making nose. I’m guessing you area PRD voter.
Panama is open to all cultures, that’s why we’re a great country. Yeah, lots of Gringos have a distorted view of the world, but we can’t knock the fact that we did (and still do) need their help.
Grow up.
What is with Panamanians being so obsessed with “respect”? Embera has mentioned a lack of “respect” about a billion times.
In my five years living in Panama, I’ve noticed it’s a very common trend.
I mean, even politicians are obsessed with people showing them respect.
Where I come from (no, I’m not a gringa), the golden rule is that you need to earn respect, it’s not just afforded to you.
Does anyone in Panama follow that rule?
Embera tell me: Do you think people should respect you and every other Panamanian (or anyone, really) just because? Do you honestly believe that???
I find it amazing to read some people’s posts here of how reading this stupid blog and disputing with one person on it gives them a “hole picture” about Panama big enough to threathen about investment decisions. It’s plain ridiculus. No one likes to be mock at, simple. Why are the blog postings to be taken as mere fun, but one or two guy’s post to be be taken dead serious? There is NO Anti-American sentiment in Panama. Everyone loves, and some even idolized, the US Dollar they have in their pocket. Even these fellow Embera, or else he’d be carring Panamian Balboa coins anywhere he go. No one likes to be look down to, and since most Panamanian such as Embera are poor, with 60% of them working class living on a $400.00 or less a MONTH salary. And just 5% above USD$2,000.00. Their recentment, insecurities, or whatever else you want to call it, comes from the same source it does anywhere else in the world. In the end of the day, you would never stop arguing. Why pick on on the guy? Have you laugh at the blog on go on with your life. Is it too dificult to understand that some people may be offended when mocked and looked down to? Would you rather see Panamanian’s (which obviously do not know much about this blog) come here and kiss this guy’s gay ass?
I work for an international firm in the US. I commute between the US, Canada and Europe.
I use Euros, Canadian dollars and and US dollars. I am one of those Panamanians who have never called the US dollar, Balboa.
No longer a Friend, just because I use the name Embera, you assume that I am poor.
Food for thought: The daughter of Panamanian parents, Ursula Burns is the Chairman and CEO of Xerox.
Panamanians have never been a monolithic people.
I am offended by this blog because it represents foolishness and things most people are guilty of doing, not only Panamanians.
And xerox is an American company
Brother, you are right. I wrongly assumed you were part of the majority of all poor Panamanians. I was just trying to be more general and less specific about characters. Hahaha reading back it’s funny though. Beg your pardon bro.
LOL I love the response to many of these posts. “F@*% YOU and all this anti-Panamanian bulls*$%! A girl from Bocas del Toro married a Prince in Europe and the daughter of Panamanian parents is the CEO of XEROX!!!!”
YOU ARE PROBABLY A PRD VOTER!!! Best. Insult. Ever.
There is so much here to agree and disagree on. If I may put in my two cents:
YES: Resentments towards the USA should be put aside when marketing our country, as being welcoming to ALL foreigners is one of the things that makes our people so charming.
YES: The USA has done A LOT for Panama and we SHOULD be greatful.
NO: The USA didn’t do us ANY of this good without it being a part of their secret agenda. The USA DOES NOT have our wellbeing in mind and it never has.
YES: It is a good idea to do some background research when coming to live in a foreign land and to STUDY about the relations between the countries. It is REALLY uncomfortable for Panamanians to witness American’s arrogance and ignorance towards latin american culture altogether and their LACK OF KNOWLEDGE OF HISTORY. Furthermore, it makes us feel SORRY for them and many times the resentments come out and it makes us look like HATERS. Which we’re not. But it’s not easy to forgive and forget when you go through an invasion. In any case, we need to grow a little in that sense, but we also need more time to heal. I know it’s been about 20 years, but that means LOTS OF US LIVED THROUGH IT. So we remember.
One last thing:
I am a Panamanian. I am NOT a PRD voter. I LOVE THIS BLOG. I loved “things white people like” (which I believe this stemmed out from) and I love this blog, because it is hillarious. DEFINITELY to be taken with a chill pill.
The one about fishnet sarongs was precious. Those things are hideous, btw. Only fat racatacas wear those!
Please do one about how we love that we don’t have a military.
Peace and Love.
I love platanitos. kthxbai
BARKEY!!!
I am really upset by that comment about respect being EARNED. How can you earn respect?
I know how you can LOSE it, but earn it? That isn’t fair. Everyone should just RESPECT EACH OTHER AS A DEFAULT.
How HORRIBLE to go around disrespecting everyone until they do something to EARN your respect? WHO ARE YOU!??? I mean seriously. How dare you. That is the arrogance that is NOT welcome here. Panamanians are welcoming, but you know why? Because MANY of us are humble and open to new ideas. We almost always show respect in our own little quirky ways UNTIL we are disrespected with arrogance, ignorance, and a bigger than thou attitude. Panamanians HATE that crap.
That is A HORRIBLE way to think and I’m sorry. I do NOT respect that opinion. You LOST this Panamanian’s respect! For serious. I really don’t think you will do well here with that kind of mentality.
According to a recent survey 95% of all Panamanians do NOT hate Gringos. Granted, 15% do, but this is a sign of democracy.
Unlike Zonians who used to live secluded among themselves in the Canal Zone, the so-called “resident tourists” who moved to Panama recently live among Panamanians, thus they have much harder times adjusting to the cultural differences and somehow naively expect to find more or less the same kind of culture as they left behind in the USA. All they want is to take advantage of the much CHEAPER cost of living enjoyed in Panama as compared to anywhere in the USA. Most of the resentments come from the basic cultural shocks and misunderstandings experienced by Gringos as well as by Panamanians. In my humble opinion, it is for the “tourists” to adapt and try to enjoy the good things Panama has to offer while avoid criticizing of things that no exactly as they are back home in the USA. Failing to do so, will only frustrate the new comers and upset the old stayers…
Haha survey? I wanna hear about this…
This might be the greatest blog post to date..
Your completely correct on this blog!!
Americanos son peros. Todos los saben. Las embajadas americanas solamente tienen spias y sapos. Arrogante, ignorante y sin valores. Dejan los donde los encuentren.
Turned down for your tourist visa AGAIN????? Bummer.
This is one gringo that can’t wait to get the hell out of Panama…ain’t coming back. The people here see me as a walking dollar bill and try to rip me off any chance they get. I’m tired of the rotten attitude displayed toward gringos. Screw this place and to hell with Panama!
