Panamanians really like models. They like parties with models, having friends who are models, getting featured in Ellas as if they were models…etc. To the foreigner, associating with professional beautiful people may not sound like such an unusual thing. But be careful: it is a trap.
Every Panamanian between the ages of 12 and 32 in Panama has either tried becoming a model or currently considers themselves a model, irrespective of their appearance. This mission starts in pre-adolescence with taking pictures of themselves in the mirror or having someone else take their picture at The Decameron. Then somewhere during high school or graduation, most Panamanians will get in touch with Gabo. To be featured in Gabo’s HIP magazine is to hit a homerun. It says to the world, “I am not only a Panamanian model but a sophistocated Panamanian model.”
It is important to know that becoming a model is more than just a job for most Panamanians: it is important cultural marketing. For Panamanians, becoming a model at Prestige or Tania Hyman is the symbol that a female has completed her transformation from an ugly girl into a beautiful one. In fact, if you know any girls who moved from Chiriqui to Panama City, there is a good chance they will tell you they are a model or participate in something related to fashion.
For those who haven’t made it to the top of the domestic model world, thankfully Panamanians have paparazzi like Cocoas.net and Mastrip.net to make them feel like they have. (Note: it can be useful to familiarize yourself with these sites since they are beloved by cool Panamanians. Follow-up note: these sames sites are hated by cooler Panamanians.)
Dude, you’re a frickin genius. This site is pure oro.
Good one.
indeed!!! any “chola” here can be a super model
Althought Panamanians like all these stuff you post in this blog, one thing that´s for sure is that we may not like to read this ridicoulus blog with a bad sense of humor…of course, NorthAmerican humor.
Its full of unbased superiority… just as if the person writing the posts would think of comming from a superior culture… And I´d regret letting u know that American culture is not the best one there is (if there is an american culture at all).
No one is perfect.
But our culture, with all those characteristics that u point out in your weird sense of humor is more of an insult than an anthropologic way of pointing out the differences someone from the American culture could find in ours.
Ill write a phrase I heard at a store while on a visit to Miami, from an “american” to another person: “if you don´t like it here, then go back to your country”.
Our culture is what it is: is a whole mixture of American, Spanish, Indian, French, European, Chinese, AfroCaribbean cultures… all at the same place and time, getting all together in harmony and forming the future Panamanian Culture (our culture is always changing).
So, sorry if u don´t like our women wearing some bags you might look down to with disregard and disdain,… Sorry if you think we´re loud and many other attitudes you´d find as defects. But that´s the way we are. We like it, in that imperfect way. Because we know where it comes from and what it remind us.
THIS IS NOT the USA and never will. And that is soo typical of Americans to complain about a place with another culture, that is not their country, and wanting to have all they´re used to back at the States: that would never happen because YOU ARE NOT in your country!!!! You are somewhere else.
If you´re gonna enjoy all the benefits of being in Panama (that´s the reason you´re here, not because you love this imperfect, humid and hot place), then do so; but get used to Panama, because you have to adpat to the places you go, not the other way.
At least, our culture (and the Latinamerican ones) is way richer than the American and we can be proud of it, meanwhile current generations of northamericans live in a constant search for a valid background that they haven´t and never will get if they keep thinking this way.
Dude… relax. You have to learn how to laugh. This is not about mocking panamanian or saying the writter’s culture is superior to panamanian culture, it’s just a blog of the observations of a foreigner in the country. I’d do the same if I lived in the US, France, Kenia, pick one.
And yes, I’m panamanian too.
Chill man!
The American culture is largely devoted to models, from Disney princesses, to Victoria Secret, Sports Ilustrated and alike, Trumps Miss USA, Teen USA and Miss Universe, baby girl peagants, all sorts of model based magazines FHM, MAXIM, etc. and their corresponding behind the scenes specials. Hooters, bikini contests, wet tshirt contests, and alike. The mayor advertisement industry on the world based on exploiting the female sensuality. Hollywood!!! Cable TV, and let us not forget the largest production of ever kind of pornography known to man. Even Time Warner produces porn in America. The only place in the world where a Huge Hefner or Larry Flint could be a celebrity, and models would dream of becoming bunies or better yet house bunnies living in a pimps mansion, and become a celebrity. So come on buddy say it out loud: “I am an American and I have to say that Panamamians really like models!!! Uhu uhu uhu” Goofy moron.
